iTunes 10.0.0.68

September 2nd, 2010 ajua 2 comments

Apple released iTunes 10.0.0.68.

They are still thinking that it’s good to install a boatload of things just to manage their players and phone with your music library. A quick look into their installer makes me think that the process of removing features will be the same as before.

I will make new installers in a couple of hours.

VLC 1.1.4

August 27th, 2010 ajua No comments

VLC is a free multiplatform video and audio player with plenty of features and a great interface. It doesn’t need any external codecs and can stream multimedia over a network.

It supports GPU acceleration for video playback.

The quality of its video engine is not that good compared with other players (at least in my personal tests), but you can tweak the options to improve it.

For a player with internal codecs, I recommend Media Player Classic Home Cinema instead. Its video quality is superior, supports video acceleration and has plenty of features too.

SharePod 3.9.5

July 6th, 2010 ajua No comments

If you have an iPod music player, you will enjoy this little freeware program.

Sharepod lets you copy music and video files between your iPod and your PC without having to install anything.

For example, you can put it on your iPod so you can copy files off your iPod to any computer, something iTunes doesn’t let you do. You can even copy files from more than one PC to your iPod, which is really great.

It is very handy because you don’t need to install anything else to start copying files between iPods and PC’s. It supports playlists and its really easy to use.

ffdshow rev 3495

July 2nd, 2010 ajua No comments

ffdshow is an open source codec that supports all major formats like DivX, Xvid, H.264, AVC, MPEG1, MPEG2 and many others. It also has filters for post-processing and enhancing the video quality.

Subtitles can be displayed as well, including those embedded in containers like MP4 or MKV. You can use ffdshow as an audio decoder too, but AC3Filter is way better in handling AC3, DTS or SPDIF output.

I have included a registry file that contains the settings I use to set ffdshow as the default decoder for all the supported files. It will display external or embedded subtitles and add post-processing to the video.

ffdshow ScreenshotI use ffdshow, AC3Filter and DivX Tech Preview to play everything I want. You can use Haali Media Splitter instead of DivX Tech Preview to support thumbnails of MKV. For video playback, Media Player Classic is my favorite.

Realtek HD Audio Drivers 2.48

May 6th, 2010 ajua No comments

Realtek HD Audio Drivers 2.48.

Most computers and the majority of Motherboards with integrated audio from all the major manufactures come with Realtek audio chips. Most of them, however, take long to publish updates to their support sites. Here’s the latest version.

If you ever get any problems when updating drivers you can use Driver Sweeper after you have uninstalled you current drivers to clean your system for left over files. After that, reboot your computer and install the new ones. This will reduce the chance of having driver issues.
