Orbit Downloader is maybe the best freeware download manager.
It has resume support, can download multiple files at a time, supports HTTP, FTP and other protocols. You can use it with any web browser.
Version 3 and 4 come with a few interface changes. However, the developers haven’t take the time to add column show/hide support or a feature to save the columns position. I will keep the current custom installer unchanged until this has been solved.
uTorrent is the most popular BitTorrent client.
It is very light on resources, yet it has all the features you need to manage your torrent downloads. It has a very active development team that releases new versions very often.
VLC is a free multiplatform video and audio player with plenty of features and a great interface. It doesn’t need any external codecs and can stream multimedia over a network.
It supports GPU acceleration for video playback.
The quality of its video engine is not that good compared with other players (at least in my personal tests), but you can tweak the options to improve it.

Shark007, its author, has a version for Windows Vista users called Vista Codec Package that works as well as Win7codecs.
I use ffdshow, AC3Filter and DivX Tech Preview to play everything I want. You can use Haali Media Splitter along with DivX Tech Preview to support thumbnails of MKV files (just disable Haali thumbnailing feature to use DivX, which is much better). For video playback, Media Player Classic Home Cinema is my favorite.

You can read the release notes to learn about fixed and existing issues.
If you ever get any problems when updating drivers you can use Driver Sweeper after you have uninstalled you current drivers to clean your system for left over files. After that, reboot your computer and install the new ones. This will reduce the chance of having driver issues.
