VLC is a free multiplatform video and audio player with tons of features and a great interface.
It doesn’t need any external codecs and can stream multimedia over a network.
Highly recommended.

Every two months, Microsoft releases a DirectX package which contains security and performance updates.
Note: It seems that something were wrong with the latest redistributable. Microsoft has pulled down the download page for November 2008.
