If you ever encounter yourself stuck in a file operation that cannot be completed, like moving or deleting a file or folder this program can help you. It is called Unlocker and it adds an entry to the shell context menu.
When you try to delete or move a file or folder and windows says it cannot do it because another process or person is accessing it, you right-click the file or folder in question and choose Unlocker.
It opens a windows where you can see which process are locking the item. You can either kill the process or unlock it. The latter works great for 99% of the cases. If you still can’t do it, well, kill the process and you are ready to go.
Its freeware

I use to use it all the time on my old computer and loved it. Now I got a new computer with Vista Home and Mozilla Firefox and I can’t get it to work. Usually when you right click it’s there but now it’s not. It’s down in the right hand corner but it does nothing. Please help I can’t find any where on their site where to ask the question. Many thanks.
According to the author’s site, Unlocker works on Vista:
“- Does unlocker work on Windows Vista? Yes. If you want to disable UAC globally, go to “Control Panel” then “User Accounts” then again “User Accounts” then “Turn User Account Control” and set it to Off, then restart your computer.”
I don’t use it anymore since i got Vista. If a program lock a file or folder, it is likely that explorer.exe process is doing it.
Shutting it down and open it again unlocks the files/folders for me.
Try disabling UAC to see if Unlocker works for you.
Thanks. Yes I did try disabling UAC and still nothing.
