How to remove Bonjour Service

October 2nd, 2007 ajua Leave a comment Go to comments

Adobe newest Creative Suite 3 installs Apple’s Bonjour service even if you don’t install Version Cue. Its main goal is to provide zero-configuration connectivity between Version Cue server and the suite’s applications.

When installed by Creative Suite 3 applications, the name used by Bonjour for Windows in the services control panel is:

##Id_String2.6844F930_1628_4223_B5CC_5BB94B879762##

If you are using Version Cue, you can correct the service name just by running two commands at a run prompt box (Start – Run):

  • “C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe” -remove
  • “C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe” -install

The service will now be displayed with the correct name in the Services control panel.

But if you don’t need it, you can get rid of it easily. Just follow this simple steps:

  • Open a Windows Run prompt box (Start – Run) and type the following command: “C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe” -remove
  • Navigate to the following folder in Windows Explorer: C:\Program Files\Bonjour
  • Rename the mdnsNSP.dll file in that folder to mdnsNSP.old
  • Restart your computer
  • Delete the the Program Files\Bonjour folder

Note: Please take into account that if you are running Windows in other language, the path to Program Files maybe different.

Also remember that if the path to the file contains spaces, you need to enclose the command in ” “, or double quotes. Just as it is shown above.

hey, ive tried all these “solutions” on this site and none of them work… wen i type things into run and cmd it says it cant locate the programme and when i browse the programme files its not there…
i can’t install itunes because of this shitty bonjour so how do i get the piece of crap off

Try installing Bonjour manually using the iTunes original installer.

Open it up with WinRAR or 7-Zip and extract the msi for Bonjour and install it.

If it works, you can disable it later but iTunes will install it again when you run the setup, unless you are using my iTunes switchless installers.

You people are lucky. A lot of people are getting the error:

    C:\Program Files\Bonjour>mdnsresponder -remove

    remove service failed (1060)

So now what? Adobe and Apple should be prosecuted for secretly installing this crapware. I leaves this high-end system dragging. If we kill the process manually things pick up.

Try disabling the service from starting up automatically.

You can use ServiceTweaker to do that.

This was the only way that worked for me. I have XP:

Read Post #37 (Heaty Peaty). His was the easiest way:

    (In the Bonjour folder,
    delete the .exe file
rename the .dll file to “old”
reboot and delete entire Bonjour folder after starting up).

Prior to this, I tried all the ways suggested and kept getting error messages.

I think that start, run …”C:….” is the harder way.
    Thank you Heaty!

I went to download the version 8 of itunes and it would not install. Message was to remove old version of Bonjour first. Well I am unable to do that. even with all this advice. Without the current version of itunes the iphone is not usable either. Can someone help

  8. November 18th, 2008 at 12:32 | #8

If you can’t uninstall it, try downloading it from Apple. Install it over the version you have and run the iTunes installer again.

If it doesn’t work, download an uninstall program such as Revo Uninstaller and try to force its removal.

Also, see if my custom installers for iTunes (that doesn’t install Bonjour, MobileMe, among other things) works well with your iPhone.

That command didn’t work for me and the problem was the quotes. I replaced the quotes in the command I copied off this website with ones typed from my keyboard (shifted 2) and it now works.

This is a direct paste of the command line that worked for me using Windows Xp

    “C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe” -remove

Note the quotes are upright as is standard for windows and not the odd slanted ones on this site.

    Thanks
I managed to get rid of Bonjour folder.

Still when i check the windows services the following string appears.
    ##Id_String2.6844F930_1628_4223_B5CC_5BB94B879762##

It is certainly a bonjour Service. I can disable the service.
Can someone tell me how to get rid of this damn string from my services.

I tried the command prompt several times and no luck. I then tried removing it directly from the program files but I get a message saying “Cannot Delete mDNSResponder: Acess Denied Make sure the disk is not full…” I am the administrator on my computer so is there any other way to delete it? Thanks for the help.

  14. December 2nd, 2008 at 15:51 | #14

    @Tenuka:
If you already removed the service but the entry is still there, you can delete it by editing the registry.

Look for the subkey in this key and delete it (please be careful while editing/deleting registry keys, you need to know what you are doing): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services

    @Acuratl:
Browse for the file manually using the Run box, then just add the -remove parameter (be aware of quotes is the path contains spaces).

The service must be running, thats why you can’t delete the file. Remove it first (or try to stop it using services.msc in the run box or ServiceTweaker.

Followed the above process, and nothing is left in the c:\Program Files\Bonjour folder including the folder. Tried to go back and download iTunes 8, and still go the same message. Help!

  17. December 30th, 2008 at 21:56 | #17

What message are you getting? If you need Bonjour, you can download it from Apple.

If you don’t want it, try my iTunes installer, which doesn’t install anything besides iTunes itself.

It says, “The older version of Bonjour cannot be removed. Contact your local support group.” When I click on “OK”, it says, “The installer was interrupted before the requested operations for iTunes could be completed. Your system has not been modified. To complete these operations at a later time, please run the installer again.” Please help. As far as I am concerned, I don’t need Bonjour. I have tried to download it, and when I do, I get an error message that says, “The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package ‘Bonjour.msi’ in the box below.” I’m not at all sure what to type into the box, so when I click on “OK”, I get a message that says, “The path ‘C:\DOCUME 1\Owner\Locals 1\Temp\IXP044.TMP\Bonjour.msi’ cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this location and try again, or try to find the installation package ‘Bonjour.msi’ in a folder from which you can install the product Bonjour.” In the meantime, I am going to try to use your iTunes installer and see what happens. Thanks!

Use Microsoft’s Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to delete the previous installer’s information and try to run the latest installer from Apple again.

Also, you can try my iTunes installer to see if it helps.

I ran across Bonjour in the same situation on a Vista 64 machine. Having run the uninstall, I went through the registry to remove the keys left behind. Bad idea. Box IE and Firefox quit working after that. Adobe CS3 had to be completely uninstalled, then re-installed. This time around, I used the following commands:
    Run

    “C:\Program Files (x86)\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe” -remove

    regsvr32 /u “C:\Program Files (x86)\Bonjour\mdnsNSP.dll”

This combination worked much better than the -remove command alone and stopped the service from running.

apple must have done something… just copying the script in doesn’t “find” in my WIN MCE. One has to browse to bonjour…

    really insidious…

    but thanks for the lead…

Great instructions! I didn’t really need them, but they sound very precise and great! As for URI (not to be confused with URL of course) – it is a unique survery. Who’s got a relative named “URI” and if so where is he?

I’m coming late to this, but apparently my computer just installed this stupid application. When I try and follow your first instruction, I get the “Can’t find C:|Program …” reply. Someone early on mentioned “smart quotes”. How do I make just regular quotes?

    thanks

  30. March 3rd, 2009 at 12:24 | #30

Just browse for the file manually and add the quotes at the beginning and the end just before the -remove parameter.

    It should work.

Thanks for the information, and I was able to stop Bonjour (I am running XP, SP3). However, I received an unexpected message from my TiVo Desktop: “The Bonjour Service is not running. Bonjour is required for TiVo desktop to work. Try restarting your computer or re-enable the service in Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services.” Had to restart the service… insidious little program.

  34. April 1st, 2009 at 20:31 | #34

I didn’t knew that TiVo required Bonjour.
However, you can try to change the startup type of Bonjour to manual to see if TiVo can stop/start it when you are using it.

hi, i’ve tried all these steps here but it doesn’t seem to be working for me and when i go to search for the bonjour folder in program files, there’s no bonjour folder to be found, and when i went to search it claims that no bonjour folder exsits…yet when i go to control panel to add/remove programs it’s still there…when i click the remove button a message comes up saying -

“the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailble. click OK to try again or enter a alternate path to a fodler containing the installation package ‘Bonjour.msi’ in the box below”.

i ‘ve browsed but i don’t see anything that is helpful.. any ideas what i can do to get this program removed since it is not permitting me to install new verison of itunes. thanks !

i got an update on my itunes and my bonjour file (bonjour.msi) is missing, the entire file is gone & i cant get an update of nothing. My itunes wont even open anymore. Could anyone help me out please.

  37. April 4th, 2009 at 17:54 | #37

Here are two things you can try:

1.- Open the original iTunes installers with WinRAR o 7-Zip and extract the Bonjour MSI installer. Now when add/remove asks for the MSI package point it to the installer you extracted.

2.- If the above doesn’t work, search for Microsoft MSI Cleanup Utility and use it to erase all traces of Bonjour installations from you computer.

  38. April 4th, 2009 at 17:55 | #38

From the original iTunes installer extract the Bonjour setup and run it. Maybe this can solve your problem.

Another option is to reinstall you iTunes by using the original installer or my custom installer.

    Good luck.

After finally getting the bonjour service removed (I also had to search for and remove a reg key), then I ran the iTunes setup and then it wanted the iTunes.msi (just like when you try to remove it from Add/Remove programs). Ugh! After more sleuthing, I downloaded the Windows Intallation Cleanup Utility, and used it to remove iTunes – you can also remove Bonjour this way apparently. After all that, I was able to install iTunes. Thanks ajua for this great discussion which led me to the solution!

Right recipe, wrong attribution. Apple calls this service Bonjour and has promoted it, but it’s also known as Zeroconf. At any rate, while it’s conforms to Apple’s standard, it’s Adobe that is installing it, you why in the world are people blaming Apple?

By the way, Zeroconf/Bonjour is a really handy service and protocol and it is very closely related to DNS. Expect to see it a lot more as it has some great features (even if you don’t want it just now).

If you get the “remove service failed” message, try to run the command window with administrator privileges in Windows Vista:
    - go to start menu
    - type “cmd” in the search field and do not press enter
    - Vista will suggest you the command prompt element
    - right click on it –> run as administrator
    - go through the process described in this page, it will be ok now

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility from Microsoft and erase all entries of bonjour.

Now you should be able to install iTunes normally.
