How to remove Bonjour Service

October 2nd, 2007 ajua Leave a comment Go to comments

Adobe newest Creative Suite 3 installs Apple’s Bonjour service even if you don’t install Version Cue. Its main goal is to provide zero-configuration connectivity between Version Cue server and the suite’s applications.

When installed by Creative Suite 3 applications, the name used by Bonjour for Windows in the services control panel is:

##Id_String2.6844F930_1628_4223_B5CC_5BB94B879762##

If you are using Version Cue, you can correct the service name just by running two commands at a run prompt box (Start – Run):

  • “C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe” -remove
  • “C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe” -install

The service will now be displayed with the correct name in the Services control panel.

But if you don’t need it, you can get rid of it easily. Just follow this simple steps:

  • Open a Windows Run prompt box (Start – Run) and type the following command: “C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe” -remove
  • Navigate to the following folder in Windows Explorer: C:\Program Files\Bonjour
  • Rename the mdnsNSP.dll file in that folder to mdnsNSP.old
  • Restart your computer
  • Delete the the Program Files\Bonjour folder

Note: Please take into account that if you are running Windows in other language, the path to Program Files maybe different.

Also remember that if the path to the file contains spaces, you need to enclose the command in ” “, or double quotes. Just as it is shown above.

no problem. i don’t like anything that i don’t explicitly allow running in the background. specially things that use the network.

how come when i press enter after typing “C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe” – remove in the RUN, the computer note that Windows cannot find “C:\Program.’.? Thanks.

  7. December 3rd, 2007 at 15:17 | #7

maybe you have windows in another language instead of english. If this is your case, you can change Program Files for a string in your language.

Check manually if the file is there before running the command.

To the person getting the “cannot find “C:\Program.’” – type the command as follows:

    C:\Progra~1\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe -remove

Your problem is the space in the command as you were leaving out the quotes

The problem is the quotes are smart quotes “ ” not a standard quote ”

    “C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe” – remove

Thanks a lot ajua, works great!

Vista users, make sure you run cmd.exe as an administrator, else it won’t remove the service.

Thanks for the tips, I needed this one.
I hope apple wont do this kind of stuff.

  12. March 24th, 2008 at 11:46 | #12

I hope that too, but they are already pushing it too hard: their latest “effort” is their software updater that installs even if you choose no to install it when running the latest itunes and safari.

this updater tries to install quicktime, itunes or safari if you don’t have them.

You seem to have found the right solution (I had the same problem as rjbacangoy in his Dec. 2 post), but I’d like to point out that the suggestion in your Dec. 3 post is incorrect. “Program Files” keeps its name, it’s “Common Files” that’s renamed (to “Fichiers Communs” in French). As far as I know the “C:\Program Files\Bonjour” directory name is correct in any language.

  14. April 3rd, 2008 at 16:55 | #14

You are right Peter. But that is only in vista. In XP people in other languages have both Program Files and Common Files in their language (spanish is Archivos de Programa and Archivos Comunes).

With vistam they are only a pointer to Program Files and Common Files no matter what you see in windows explorer. They will always resolve to english.

I typed in the command, but I don’t know what to do after that. I also changed the name of the file mdnsNSP.dll to mdnsNSP.old, but after I restarted my computer and tried to delete the folder “Bonjour” an error came up telling me to make sure the file isn’t in use, or full or write-protected. I don’t know if it’s in use or not, or full or write-protected. Can someone help? Thnx a lot…

    I didn’t realize I can’t type right. I’m so sorry.

    //REVISED VERSION//

I followed all the following steps and I get this.
(I typed the first line and the result is the second line)

    C:\Program Files\Bonjour>c:\Progra~1\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe -remove
    Removed service “B”

When I restart my computer the program folder is still there along with all of its contents which are, mDNSResponder.exe and mdnsNSP.old. If anyone could help would you please. Couldn’t I just disable this from the services?

  18. April 10th, 2008 at 23:56 | #18

Frustrated, are you on a limited account? maybe this is what is holding you back. Try the instructions on an administrator account. Also you can take full administrative privileges of that folder before trying to delete it.

  19. April 10th, 2008 at 23:59 | #19

James, you can try to disable it typing services.msc in the run box.

are you sure about the full path to the bonjour folder, please double-check it. Take note on the double quotes in the path:

    “C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe” -remove

hey, for some reason the command doesnt work for me, i copied-pasted it and still the “cannot find..make sure you spelled correctly” error shows up

  26. May 12th, 2008 at 14:31 | #26

JJ: try exactly the same as user down posted above your comment, locate the file using the browse button and then add -remove at the end, taking into account double quotes if the path contains spaces.

that should work. In some languages, the path is named different.

    May 24th, 2008 at 02:53 | #27

For some that still can’t get it to work. Go to the command prompt. ->Start -> Run -> (type in) cmd (enter key) then paste this in to the comand line and press enter.

    C:\>C:\Progra~1\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe -remove

You should see this as a result.

Removed service “B” (means the crap has been removed)

  28. JM
    May 24th, 2008 at 02:55 | #28

should be this at the prompt you need to paste:

    C:\Progra~1\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe -remove

  29. May 24th, 2008 at 04:30 | #29

The comment JM made is for english versions of Windows only.

The 8-character names for other Windows languages are different.

I just updated the post to include some notes.

The easiest way to do this is from services.msc and disable de service

    ##Id_String2.6844F930_1628_4223_B5CC_5BB94B879762##

And the Bonjour Service is now installed by some apple apps.

I’m aware that the easiest way is to disable it. But i wrote the guide to uninstall it, so it no longer exists in your system.

Thanks for the info, maybe other user just to disable it.

    Hmmm…

When I type the below line into the RUN and hit enter, the CMD screen flashes for a second, but I do not get any confirmation that anything happened:

    C:\Progra~1\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe -remove

Did it work? Or am I supposed to see “Removed Service B”?

Also, when I do the CMD method, comment #27 posted by JM, I get the response “Remove Service Failed”.

  33. May 31st, 2008 at 04:47 | #33

Don’t get confused. If your Windows is in english, use this in the Run box

    “C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe” -remove

and follow the instructions. It will work. I can’t remember if you get to see anything in the command prompt, but you should be able to rename the file, reboot and then delete the entire folder.

Try it, and you till have doubts, don’t hesitate to post a comment again.

    Regards, ajua.

guys, that was some pretty confusing instructinos on removing a software…
having to use the run command and fussing over the language difference must have created much more work than necessary.

the easiest way to do this, the way i did it anyways, is open up [my computer]–>–>[program files]–>[bonjour]. when you’re in there, delete the “mNDSResponder.exe” “thing”(for the lack of a better word in my head at the moment).
Once deleted, change the name of the “.dll” file in the same folder to an “.old” ending just as described above.
Having done so, all you need to do is reboot your computer and delete the folder once it starts up again.

having said so, thanks for the tip on how to remove this thing that i don’t want. all the best.

Hello. My computer has windows xp/2000 but also my son installed ‘safari’ on my computer. (I also have windows explorer.) My question is: Do I need this Bounjour Service to use the Safari? Will Safari still work if Bonjour Service is deleted? My Zone Alarm keeps alerting me. Also, I lost internet service (I am a missionary in Rwanda) and found out that the reason was an automatic Microsoft update KB951748 and because I have Windows XP/2000 and Zone Alarm it shut me out of the internet world. I went to zonelabs.com (as I was encouraged to do) and downloaded their newest basic firewall and it helped. I now have a slow computer and still cannot always get online. Before the Microsoft KB951748 there wasn’t a problem. Could Bounjour have anything to do with this? Thanks for your help.

  39. July 13th, 2008 at 02:56 | #39

    Hi cand.
I don’t use Safari, but i think it is safe to remove Bonjour Service even if you or your son use Safari. Remove it, and i f Safari starts to have problems, you can always reinstall the browser.

About ZoneAlarm and Windows XP Update KB951748, i’m posting tomorrow a some information. Bonjour doesn’t interfere here, by the way.

Meanwhile, Check Point (ZoneAlarm developers) released new versions and a patch that fixes those incompatibilities with KB951748. Check their site.

    Regards.

How do I know if I “need” Bonjour or not? (!)

  44. September 6th, 2008 at 02:53 | #44

Normally, it is needed for Adobe Version Cue, Apple TV streaming, Apple iTunes library sharing, etc.

But when in Windows, these services can interact without Bonjour running.

Dylan: make sure the service is not running. If it is, launch Windows Task Manager and stop it in the Services tab.

Charlie: Many us don’t like that either…

i am on x64 bit vista and nothing work for me :(

have tried to use these commands:

    “C:\Program Files (x86)\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe” – remove
    “C:\Program Files (x86)\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe” -remove
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe -remove

getting ” the file name, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect”

    Any ideas?
I am logged as administrator but still have no permissions to delete .exe file.

  49. September 26th, 2008 at 16:03 | #49

I haven’t try to remove Bonjour on x64 before.

Did you try to look for the file to see what is its exact location?

    don`t worry do this work:

    3.restart windows
4.delete bonjour folder from program files
